Don’t you find it annoying that to enter or view your data, you have to be sat at your PC? Often you want access to your info at a time when you are nowhere near your computer. Do you have to scribble notes down on paper, to enter later on, and then struggle to decipher your scribbles?
The advent of cloud computing has made all of this possible. Cloud computing, to provide a simple explanation, is where your data is stored on remote, secure servers, often referred to as “The Cloud”. The beauty of this system is that, unlike a traditional desktop computer, with the right hardware, you can gain access to your entire digital life. Services like Dropbox, Google Drive etc, allow you to store
files on your computer, and have a mirror copy of those files stored “in the cloud” so you can log into any computer, anywhere in the world, and access your data.
In agriculture, we are seeing an increased uptake in cloud computing technologies. As you no doubt know, it’s very frustrating to need info, but the info you need is on your computer, in your office, and you are outside in the field.
Orchid recently introduced the Orchid FarmWizard cloud-based Herd Management system to alleviate this issue, allowing a true “access anywhere” approach to data entry and viewing.
Because the system is accessed and managed through a web browser, you
can enter and view your info anywhere with an internet connection.
To further add to the mobility of the system, we have mobile apps for Android and iPhone, that allow you to take your data with you, giving you a herd management system “in your pocket”. The mobile apps don’t even require an internet connection to use. Just simply synchronise your data with your mobile device when you are within 3G or WiFi range, then take your mobile device outside and use it. Data is temporarily stored in the device, and you simply re-synch your phone when you are back within range of an internet connection.
